Welcome to Oakshaw. Defined by its geography, Oakshaw is a singular area occupying the whole of the long hill to the north of the High Street in Paisley. The town itself grew up around Oakshaw and, today, its tranquil appearance belies a rich and varied history going back as far as Roman times. The most significant period in the history of Oakshaw came with the Industrial Revolution when Paisley experienced a burgeoning economy based mainly on textiles and weaving. Famous names such as J & P Coats and Clarks made their fortunes and are still household names today. The influence of Coats can be seen in Oakshaw in the shape of the Observatory, Thomas Coats Memorial Church, and the Museum and Art Gallery. Oakshaw, given its pre-eminent position above the town and its industry, attracted the building of several villas, schools and churches of all denominations. In its heyday, Oakshaw boasted nine flourishing churches including the Gaelic Church for the displaced Highland population. In a world of dwindling beliefs and declining fortunes, church congregations have amalgamated or moved on. Former church and residential properties have been redeveloped into apartments, arts and social centres. Only two churches, Oakshaw Trinity and Thomas Coats Memorial, remain. Today, with this increase in residential properties and the influx of residents, Oakshaw has rekindled the spirit of community while retaining its village character within the heart of Paisley. Designated a conservation area in 1975 and updated, with the amalgamation of Paisley Cross, to outstanding status in 1981, Oakshaw itself has 5 A grade, 19 B grade and 13 C grade listed buildings
