Well Axe Junkies...I finished this little carver only to find that the head is junk steel. The lack of temper line after vinegar bath should have clued me in. Testing on some old pine the edge dented badly. Not to be let down I wrapped the pole and handle in a wet towel and heated the bit with my torch to non magnetic Quenched in oil in an attempt to save it. Cleaned it up and tested to see if it was hard enough to require tempering. It is much harder but not hard enough to temper and not hard enough to hold its edge when I tested it on oak. It didnt dent this time but I could feel the edge changing with my finger. So this one is now hung above my work bench and I am on the hunt for a name brand to modify the same way so I can actually use it. It was a fun project and I look forward to doing it again.
