Well Death Racers, It has been a wild couple of year. I got interested in The Canadian Death Race in 2010 and ran in the relay in 2011. I couldnt make 2012 but made solo attempts in 2013 and 2014. Unfortunately, at my level the stars needed to align to have a chance at finishing and they did not (damn stars). The Death Race has given me so much in the last few years. There is real joy in life in having purpose. Dont get me wrong, my life outside CDR is wonderful but purpose from an exercise and fitness standpoint was exhilarating. What a wild adventure my four trips to Grande Cache have been (3 races, 1 camp). This summer my son Sean got involved and I was very proud to toe the line with him. Thank you to Race Hq for asking me last year to help moderate the Facebook page. That was a blast and I got to meet even more Death Racers. The page meant that many people contacted me privately or came up to me in person and I was very privileged to count many Death Racers as friends. I met many but my online clique was a great group of friends year around - you know who you are! (Im sorry I missed the after party and awards ceremony). My suggestions for the race are: -The website could be improved by the addition of a dedicated couple of volunteers who are web savvy -The website should have an Athlete, Volunteer and Builder (founders and townfolk) Hall Of Fame with a pic and bio of important people. -CDR should consider a Canadian Death Race Foundation where a (small but building) portion of revenue goes towards a worthy Grande Cache cause such as palliative care in Grande Cache. This fund would go towards services in GC that would help people who want to die at home rather than going into a bigger city hospital. As a physician and a two time cancer survivor this is something I and others would consider donating to. CDR and others could donate to a properly run foundation that has charitable status and is overseen by a board that hopefully would involve the towns doctors and others. -I have the utmost respect for Dale Tuck. I spend a good hour or more with him at the last camp as he walked my running mate and I down Hamel. He was caring, knowledgeable, thoughtful and kind. Dale - there is a lot of negativity on this page at times but sometimes there are some good suggestions too. I believe the race would benefit from you reading the page from time to time. Stay in touch with the racers at this level because the racers are not only the life blood of the race but also the experts in ultramarathoning. I would like to introduce your new Canadian Death Race Facebook page moderator. Scott Herrin has become a very close friend in the last two years. Last year in his first solo attempt he raised a lot of money for Operation Smile who provides cleft lip and palate surgery for children whose families cant afford it. Unfortunately, he was injured and didnt finish. He came back this year with his friend Maia, brother Layne and wife Bridget (in the pic below) and they smashed it with a great relay finish. Scott will be back next year I imagine because he is a Death Racer at heart. Thank you to all the Death Racers that have made my last 4 years amazing. Thank you for all the friendships and kind words. Go Death Racers.
