Well, I was somewhat excited about the return of Garth Brooks with new music and a tour... I was never a huge fan, but none the less, a fan. He got a little weird with the whole alter-ego Chris Gaines but I eventually thought, why not? I spent a little over two years playing a lot of Garths music in a house band at the Grapevine with my ol pa Mark Robinson, so getting paid to play Garths music, helped me like him a little more I suppose. On my way to work this morning, I was listening to Sirius radio channel 60 The Highway and they were premiering Garths new song People Loving People, I thought, nice title and immediately made me think of his song We Shall Be Free. So, I was excited to hear it. I was hoping for a revival of that 90s country sound. Steel Guitars, fiddle, keys, real sounding drums and a good clean telecaster cutting through the mix... Not. Sounded like everything else on current country radio. Just a little different message than the standard pick-up truck, tailgate, dirt road, drinking parties, and the girl in bikini top and cut off shorts... After all the years of Garth standing out, why would you want to blend in now? Didnt hear a single steel guitar line, no fiddle, if there were keys they were buried in the mix. The clean tele sound was replaced with a humbucking dirty guitar sound that was soaked in delay. That poppy snare drum sound was replaced with something that sounded like a hand clap. I hope to hear more music from his album soon. And I hope this song was different from the rest. If not, I wont be buying the record. And that revival I was hoping for isnt going to happen... A little bummed to say the least...
