Well MAPAQ came to visit the shelter this week. Have some issues to tend to (need to bring our quarantine room up to code, paint all un painted surfaces, replace any of the fencing that is showing any signs of rust) and we have to register all dog walkers, indicate the number and length of each walk and all dogs have to have non-tipping water bowls. The inspector, though nice enough, didnt seem to give a rats ass that all our animals are sterilized, in fact Joyce had to insist she include that in her report. She was there for well over two hour taking notes. Our dogs are outdoors in the dog runs a minimum of 5 hours per day, walked in the woods once a day, have playtime in the dog park once a day and we arent breeding for profit but rather sinking ever deeper into debt while trying to save the lives of even just a few of the thousands of cats and dogs discarded like trash in this province. Do we need standards of care? Absolutely! Curious to know, however, how MAPAQ inspects and evaluates puppy mills. We follow the rules and we will make the required changes yet somehow I have this niggling feeling the puppy mill just down the road in Stanstead East will continue to churn out dogs with no serious repercussions. Am I a little cynical? Maybe just a tad.
