Well, Team Suspended Animation was out in full force this past weekend at the Lincoln City Summer Kite Festival. Team members starting arriving Friday morning which meant some were on the road by 0400 not to mention names (Barry and Susan) with a 4-5 hour drive in front of them. Well now that I’m thinking of it 90 % of the Team made the same commute. Our arrival on Friday found the weather to be near perfect. It didn’t take long for everyone to get into the spirit of things. Armed with shovels , anchors, line and kites of every size and shape the sky was soon filled with a blaze of color. The commute may have taken its toll and it only took one person to take notice that the local bar and eatery had vacant seating out on the deck. A wonderful evening with food, beverages and friends rounded out the evening. A special thank-you to Gary Lee. Saturday morning was filled with great anticipation. Like kids waking up early on Christmas morning, one child was found to be on the beach at or around 0500 (Pete) followed by (Gary and Ray) at or near 0515.Now Gary might even tell you Pete sent a text to him waking him up but that has not been confirmed. Some will tell you the best flying spots are picked by the early risers. Well keep this in mind, that really doesn’t mean a hill of beans if there isn’t any wind. That was the case on Saturday. The sun came out, the crowd grew and………that’s correct…. nothing……numbers vary but estimates are that about 12,000 people attended the festival on Saturday. People that have attended the festival for years and live in Lincoln City, to the likes of Rod Thrall, Debra Cooley and David Gomberg said it was some of largest crowds they had witnessed in many a year. Thank goodness for the Quad and Dual line kites as they kept the masses entertained. Things wrapped up on Saturday with flyers going to dinner in locations around town. Now one might think that is a wrap, not so my friends, not so….Around 8 pm the winds started to pick-up at wouldn’t you know it; a kite festival broke out. Now mind you some flyers had just consumed a 16 oz prime dinner and a Captains Platter of seafood and appeared to be a bit sluggish on the business end of the shovel, but kites soon filled the sky. It was a wonderful way to end the evening. Sunday started out, well lets just say……wet……operative phrase…..started out…….we did get about 4 solid hours of flying in and tried to make up for the previous days lack thereof. All things bundled together it was a wonderful weekend at Lincoln City, new friends made, and some new kite flyers brought into this fun past time. Team Suspended Animation sends out its thanks to the City, event organizers and the Oregon States Parks Dept. for putting on a wonderful event.
