Well good morning everyone! I felt that I owed a lot of people a status update along with an attempt to better explain exactly what happened last Sunday. As most people are aware I broke both of my legs last weekend. Unfortunately that is about all that is know. My cousin John DeAnna McGinnes and myself were going to test our skills of laying eyes onto one of Gods beautiful animals, the white tail deer, and once we did that we intended on sticking it thru a terminal area of its body with an arrow. Hopefully you know me well enough that the acronym P.E.T.A. stands for people eating tasting animals. Anyway I took John out to my Brothers place and gave him my normal stand and relocated my old faithful climbing stand to to an area that I felt looked promising. We hunted several hours with no luck on Friday but felt really good with our chances on Sunday morning because of the full moon and the weather was just perfect. Headed up to our stands at 30 minutes before sunrise, or really close anyhow. I am not sure how many are knowledgeable about how a climbing stands works but I have included a picture that might clear up some misjudgements. How this works is that you slide the top portion up over your head and force these small spikes into the tree then you hook your feet in the lower portion and use your upper body strength to pull the bottom portion up from the ground towards the top of the tree you repeat this process until you get to the desired height. I had done this as quietly as possible but when I got up to where I felt that I needed to be I was having a hard time getting the top portion to remain exactly where I wanted it. I argued with the stand for a short period and thought I had finally worked out our problems to exactly what I needed. I turned around on the bottom portion and set it really well. I then sat down in/on the top portion and it turned out that it WASNT stuck into the tree very well at all as it spun and dropped down but stopped when it hit the bottom portion and with me holding on for dear life. More so that I actually knew at the time. I am now hanging on to the top portion with my back to the tree and my feet dangling in open space and really unfortunate my coat was now hung up in a wing nut that I could not free myself from. I was totally screwed because I could not swing my legs out and catch hold of the tree and shinny up like a normal country boy AND I couldnt release my clothing from the stand so I could climb back up and use the stand as it was intended. Now the only option I felt that I had left was to lower my body as much as my coat would allow and just drop tearing my coat and when I hit the ground from the 15 to 20 feet drop I could just roll and save myself some serious pain. Well it turns out that this was a TERRIBLE idea!!! 15 to 20 feet is really a long ways. When I hit the ground the pain was unbelievable. I was able to contact my cousin John who made it back to the house where my family contacted the Spring River Ambulance and my dear old friend Vickie Lynn Cossey-Barnett along with the Martin Creek and Wirth First Responders. I cant tell you how happy I am with all of the folks that assisted in getting me out of the woods and into the fields where they decided it would be best if I took the helicopter to the best trauma hospital, The Med in Memphis. The doctors worked about four hours to fix the relatively clean break in my right leg that Sunday. They decided to wait until Wednesday so they could work eight hours on my left leg and ankle which had a spiral break as well as being broke in three different spot with the break descending quite a ways down into my ankle. The doctor decided that the severity of these breaks warrants that these be non-weight bearing injuries and as such I am being forced to enter rehab and an assisted living clinic for the next 90 days which is when I am supposed to get out of the wheel chair. Again I am so grateful to EVERYONE, especially my employers at Valent Aerostructures who have shown that The Man can still care for their people, I also want to thank my family and friends for their prayers and well wishes for my returning to health over the last week and the many weeks yet to come. PEACE
