Well it is nine more days until my 45th Wedding Anniversary. I have new babies due that week so I didnt take him up on his offer to take me to Hawaii. But that does lead me to some personal rules for my family that maybe will help someone else. My approach to family life starts with my personal taste. Sound silly? It isnt For example, if you were planning a wedding and money were no object what would it look like? Rustic ,outdoors, beach, indoors casual in a barn, formal in a Cathedral? Old fashioned, sleek, modern? Well your style, where you enjoy being reflects your personal taste. Many men in my experience (exceptions some are icons of style and taste makers) have no clue what are their personal taste are but simply know what they DONT like. This makes it hard for women. So I realized long ago my taste was timeless classical elegance. Which is not costly if you buy old stuff. Bob doesnt hate it. To my surprise he loves Spanish architecture. With my taste in mind I made some family rules, which since we are perfect stay in all the time! NO!. First comes Cleanliness, good hygiene, Second good manners, careful attention to needs of guest. Third Holidays are special, make plans to be home. I make every major holiday a big one (We have to, we have a lot of kids) but I mean special. BIG tree at Christmas, Easter egg hunts, Fourth of July and birthdays. No matter how broke we were I tried to keep these special, elegant, important. Why? because I want people to love to celebrate together and I want their experience to be as beautiful as I can make it on the budget I have. To this day all my kids do love family holidays and enjoy bringing friends. This is why. If you dont make things and events special in your life they never will be.Fourth I dont spend a large amount of money on this I am cleaver and I save decorations .But Bob or I never let the Materialistic component, no matter how beautiful get in the way of the real meanings we come together. This is: What we are grateful for, How can we as a unified group help others,To help each family members or friends out of tough spots, To acknowledge and honor the person or country, to celebrate our Faith. We Make Sure the real meanings of these events are not overshadowed by the beauty and their real meanings keep things special indeed .It is during these events we teach our children the real meanings of honor and courage. Then at the next family gathering we see what and how much was accomplished or implemented. As I take care of my family I want them, each and every one to be committed to a meaningful helpful life of helping others, a life of service. a life of honor, a life of beauty. And Most important the courage to commit and do things to make the world better.The world is in desperate shape we the Brooks Gang are going to help fix it in every way we can... Each and every one of us and this and backdrop of a strong home and rich familylife gives one the foundation to act on those convictions.
