Well it looks as though the battle for Market Basket is coming to a close with the most positive of all outcomes. Details are yet to be released but Artie T was in Chelmsford this morning shaking hands, laid off part timers are being recalled, and vendors are getting orders. This struggle demonstrates what can be accomplished by a united people that are willing to take a stand! This 5 week long boycott/ protest has made US Labor history by changing the course of a privately held multibillion dollar company.Approximately 2 million customers with the majority of 25,000 employees stood against corporate greed and won. In doing so preserved good paying jobs with benefits and a tradition of providing good value in the skyrocketing grocery business. Market Basket has played an integral role in providing a higher quality of life to many fixed income or lower income families and individuals, as well as those looking to stretch their food budget. Had the Arthur S side of the family retained control it would have sent many new england families into a tailspin. His plan to end the discounted price point would have not only hurt the people who rely on it to feed their families but also the communities, as food banks and supplement programs would have been further taxed. His plan to eliminate well paid, career workers replacing them with minimum/ low wage jobs would have also adversely affected the economy of the region. With Arthur T soon to be back at the reins, Market Basket will be able to continue its long tradition of service in its communities throughout our NE states. As well as provide meaningful, livable wage employment for years to come. I grant you there may be some speed bumps encountered in getting the company back up to speed, Under the leadership of Arthur T , with the backing of dedicated management and associates, will have the stores restocked and the vendors back in place in short order.
