Well, it was just a matter of time before the NFL suits royally screwed up the Ray Rice situation. But they did it in the manner weve become accustomed to in the age of Progressivism. As weve been told, the most basic form of progressive thought is that someone else will make better decisions for you: either the government (who knows all), or in this case, The High Commissioner of the National Football League, Roger Goodell. So, as a goober, when I saw Ray Rice dragging his (now) wife out of an Atlantic City elevator, my thought was, Whoa, he knocked the hell out of her. This, of course, is unenlightened thinking. Mr. Goodell, who is a lawyer, and thus trained to overlook the obvious, must have thought: a. an earthquake must have occurred in the elevator to knock down Mrs. Rice; b. an electrical shortage in the control panel must have knocked out Mrs. Rice; or c. the elevator must have mysteriously reversed direction shooting Mrs. Rice into the ceiling of the elevator and knocked her out. Unlike myself, Mr. Goodell would not have noticed that Mr. Rices biceps are the size of babies heads, or that Mr. Rice seemed contemptuous of having to move his wife from the elevator. However, after investigating the case, Mr. Goodell suspended Ray Rice for two games at the beginning of the NFL season. Later, a video surfaced and showed that (gasp) it wasnt an electrical problem, but that Ray had deliberately cold-cocked his wife in the elevator. Mr. Goodell, who is paid $44 million dollars a year to make the NFL owners wealthy, denied that he had seen this tape. The NFL, so anal that they have employees whose sole job is to examine players on game day to make sure the players are not wearing their socks too high or too low, is saying that they somehow overlooked this key piece of evidence. This is known in legal circles as, Magnus Mendacium, or The Big Lie. The Big Lie has gained a lot of credibility in recent years as politicians (mainly lawyers) have found it more comfortable to just gleefully lie large and disparage those who would target them. Thus, Goodell, despite all evidence to the contrary, can say with impunity, Nope, never saw it, lets move on. Consider, If you like your health insurance, you can keep your health insurance. This was a lie. And yet, already the apologists are pointing out that they should have known that the president was lying in the first place and that he couldnt possibly have delivered on what he promised. And anyway, its only five million of you. Maybe more. A nice little twist to blaming the victim. Magnus Mendacium is very handy indeed. A judge in Ohio, where Democrats are once again trying to stifle free speech, recently ruled that campaign speech lies were not lies but campaign rhetoric, even if they were demonstrably untrue. Quick, how soon moral divides can fall, isnt it? And now the NFL is beset with other players convicted of domestic violence; some playing, some not. One of the leagues marquee players, Adrian Peterson, has been suspended for hitting his child with a tree branch and the number of players coming forward with concussions is multiplying. But the NFL has embraced the Hip-Hop Culture for years without ever, apparently, having listened to the lyrics. They shouldnt be surprised. Theyre disturbed now because Ray Rice was one of their showpieces for marketing NFL apparel to women; a huge boon to the NFL monopoly. Complicit in this is Baltimore which celebrates the thuggishness of the retired Ray Lewis, while the rest of the country remembers him for leaving two dead in an Atlanta nightclub several years ago. One suspects that after many committees and various hearings, the actions of the Commissioner will be summed up by a cop on the beat saying, Keep moving, nothing happening here.
