Well just saw Lone Survivor. What I can tell you (and for those who havent seen it, spoiler alert) there is only one survivor. I thought special effects and costuming were spot on for the most part (with the exception that the Afghans werent actually Afghans) and the brute realism and cinematography of most of the movie really showed the enduring theme of war as a hell. HOWEVER, the glorious death that each of the US serviceman had was so grossly over dramatized it took away from the piece of film. It seemed to me more like a United States glorifying piece of propaganda than a war flick. I still cannot understand how this was even compared to Saving Private Ryan (which still maintains its dominance in the war movie industry as being the best) seeing as there was no real interchanging of action and dramatic back story (rather in Lone Survivor there was some back story at the beginning but for most of the movie it was all action) thus taking away from the sentimental appeal of each supporting character. The movie shows how far we have come as a nation and what kind of art our empire now produces (to glorify itself and its people over anyone else) is vaguely reminiscent of that of the declining of the Roman Empire. Overall I give the movie 3/5 stars, being fairly disappointed in the portrayal of dying servicemen but very impressed by the cinematography and action sequences that it had to offer. I see Lone Ranger as being nothing more than another summer blockbuster hit which was ahead of itself for any attempt at winning an Oscar.
