Well kids, at the risk of sounding impolite, can I say this? The ALS Association raised $19.4 million dollars all of last year. They received $8.4 million yesterday, and so far September has more than doubled their normal annual contributions, about $50 million. Theyve raised awareness and raised a lot of money. Good for them. So how long is this going to last and how much is enough? The ice bucket challenge has taken on a life of its own, a marketing miracle. Is this about charitable giving, or about celebrities pouring water on themselves? Please dont hate me. I feel really bad for anyone who is ill, and ALS is heinous (12,000 people in the U.S.), but so is Alzheimers (5.2 million Americans) and diabetes (25 million Americans). Ive been challenged multiple times and wont be pouring any ice water over my head, sorry. Nor will I be writing a check to ALS anytime soon. There are many good causes, many worthy causes. If you want to donate to ALS by all means do so. But if the reason you are doing it is because you saw a favorite celebrity dump water on their heads, maybe you should give it a little more thought.
