Well now ... here was something I thought would shake my worldview ... But its another sham. The author, Eric Metaxas, is an evangelical christian, or at least writes for that audience, and doesnt seem like hes too interested in the facts; historically, his works are known for their inaccuracy. So, bias doesnt mean hes wrong ... not if his sources are legit. But heres something interesting. Amidst the speculation about a finely-tuned universe (A discussion of which can be found here: wiki.ironchariots.org/index.php?title=Fine-tuning_argument) are 2 quotes by gentlemen whom we are supposed to believe are experts in the field of cosmology. Cool - that should be interesting. First, Dr John Lennox. Hes got the big PhD. Well, I looked him up and it turns out that hes not a cosmologist. His credentials are certainly very impressive; PhD in math, Science and Philosophy. But then ... the doctorate of science was for research in math ... so ... nothing formal in cosmology. Whatever - hes a smart guy. Im impressed. Check his creds here: johnlennox.org/about/ Oh! But wait - Hes an active christian apologist. From his website: He regularly teaches at many academic institutions including the Said Business School, Wycliffe Hall and the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, as well as also being a Senior Fellow with the Trinity Forum. Hes also selling books on the subject ... So hes got a vested interest in more people thinking this cosmological argument is anything but the junk-science it is. Nothing now to see here. Thanks, Doc. Let me check the other guy... Paul Davies; Physicist. That sounds pretty cool, actually. Oh! This guy is actually a cosmologist! Lets see if we can discover more ... This guy is totally great - cosmos.asu.edu/ His themes and research dont seem to have an obvious religious taint. It looks like his latest book looks at the idea that life on earth originated on Mars; a very evolutionary position. This guy is so brainy, he get a think-tank! So ... why would he be making statements about the fine-tuning of the universe? This is the sponsors page for his think-tank: beyond.asu.edu/sponsors Check that last entry - CTNS: ctns.org/about.html They are a not-for-profit funding organisation that seeks to push theology into science. So ... hes got a financial interest in the statement. Now, that doesnt mean the statement is wrong, does it? No, not really. What it does mean is that the whole article is pushing an agenda - it doesnt make an authentic, honest case for science proving a god must exist. Way to go, journalism.
