Well now we’re up to an extra on American Top 20, the #1 smash, “Like a Prayer.” It’s by a woman who was once a struggling musician in New York City. Then one day she got a big break when a management firm made her an offer she couldn’t refuse, an apartment in Paris, singing lessons, dance lessons, even a Chauffeur. She went along with it for six months, the walked away from all of it! Her story and one of her biggest hit’s, are coming up! This is the story of singer and dancer, Madonna Ciccone. Madonna grew up in Detroit and when she was 17, she went to New York hoping to make it as a professional dancer. It was tough there and she often lived a hand to mouth existence, working at odd job’s while pursuing her career. She auditioned for and she won a scholarship with the prestigious Alvin Ailey dance troop. Things we’re finally beginning to happen. Then Madonna auditioned as a singer and dancer for an international tour, by a French Disco singer, Patrick Hernandez. His manager’s we’re so impressed with her, they made an incredible offer. They said, they’d make her a star! Madonna told writer, Michal Kosakowski: “They took me to Paris and gave me everything, a vocal coach, a dance teacher, an apartment and a Chauffeur. Before meeting them, I was eating out of garbage cans sort of speak.” Living in Paris was like a French movie, but there was trouble in paradise. Madonna say’s: “They kept telling me I was going to be the next, Edith Piaf and dragged me around to show their friend’s what they’d found in the gutter of New York. I felt miserable. I had gotten used to working hard in New York and feeling my progress. After six months I told them that I was going home to visit. I left everything I had there and never returned. Back in New York City Madonna quit dancing and devoted herself entirely to music. Eventually, breaks began to come her way. She got a recording contract, her records began to hit and in 1984, seven year’s after leaving home, Madonna Ciccone made it to the top when she scored her very first #1 song, “Like a Virgin.
