Well, the government shut down, and yet the sun still came up….A government shutdown is serious, but unless it drags on, most Americans aren’t likely to notice much difference. But not for lack of our leaders trying to panic us. President Obama warned that a shutdown would be devastating because the federal government is America’s biggest employer. That panicked me a little, but for reasons he didn’t intend. Meanwhile, just as we were hearing about how that the poor government is out of money, many federal agencies were going on a shopping spree. See, if they still had money left in their budgets when the fiscal year ended Tuesday, they might get less to spend next year. So to prevent the tragedy of having to give taxpayers a refund, the Agriculture Department spent $144,000 on toner cartridges in one day. The Coast Guard spent $178,000 on new cubicle walls. And the V.A. bought $562,000 worth of artwork for its hospitals. Of course, I was just joking. No government agency would ever get less to spend than last year.
