Well....the stage lights are starting to dim and the curtains are starting to slowly draw to a close. I showed up to work early as I always have and made my usual morning rounds just visiting with folks before the day starts. Then it occurred to me that other than my ceremony tomorrow, this is my last working day as Im taking my last official day off Friday. I am starting to miss this place already. There is a lot I wont miss. I wont miss the bureaucracy and red tape with its endless number of wrenches it constantly and mindlessly throws in the gear box. I wont miss the violence, the loss or the hurt. But I will miss the seconds of chaos that suddenly interrupted hours of boredom. Ill miss the feeling you get in that last 30 seconds before you jump out of the raid van or rolling in on that Robbery in Progress, knowing that this could be your last 30 seconds but if it is, youll go knowing youve rode in with finest men and women that ever put on a badge. Ill miss the thrill of the chase, the sounds of sirens and excited radio traffic of the hounds closing in the fox. Ill miss the feeling of satisfaction knowing that you and your squad caught that rat bastard and ended someones nightmare. Ill miss that feeling of knowing that it was only by Gods grace you survived that last call and having never felt more alive in your life than you do right then. Ill miss the look of awe struck kids who really think you are some kind of super hero. Ill miss the simple thank you that you get just because you did nothing more than show up and showed someone that somebody really does care. But more than all of this, Ill miss the brotherhood. Ill miss putting out the watch and then standing on the parking lot at ES counting cars coming in like a mother hen counting chicks to make sure all are accounted for. Ill miss the quiet times in the night and youre at the IHOP sharing a cup of coffee and talking about fishing, that new BBQ grill your gonna try that weekend or what the kids did that week. Ill miss the squad weekends and all the stupid stuff that we laughed at together that nobody else can possibly understand why it would be funny. Ill miss the Lincoln breakfast and the gigging and poking that goes along with it. My friend Jim Beck, an old retired guard from years ago told me that I wont miss the circus but Ill miss the clowns. Well, I think Ill miss part of the circus but I will really miss the clowns. I love you all very much. Thank you for all the memories. Be safe and keep Policing for Jesus!!!
