Well this is no fun at all but looks like I have to deal with this. I have been thanked by some recently for not censoring the Saturna Island Bulletin Board and chastised by others for not censoring the SBB. Not what I had in mind when creating this group. Basically there seems to be 4 concerns about this group, I will do my best to address them. 1) What is the Saturna Island Bulletin board for? 2) Is a Facebook group a place to post controversial topics? 3) Is a bulletin board a place to post controversial topic? 4) Should I censor people’s opinions in this group? Now I have spent more time than I have or wanted to, to research what is Facebook and what a Bulletin Board is. The rest are my personal feelings. 1) What is Saturna Island Bulletin board for? The SBB Group Definition “The Saturna Island bulletin board serves as an information guide for residents who need information on local businesses, community events, entertainment, community information, schools, sports, volunteer opportunities, job opportunities, classifieds, and anything else that was left out.” So to expand on that, when I made the SBB I was looking for a place for non homeowners and homeowners, in other words all the residents of the island, to have a place to discuss concerns, advertise, post community events, jobs, or anything a community member felt was important. It seemed to me that the only other place that this was available was SIPOA. But that excluded anyone that did not own a home, and that is a large chunk of the Saturna residents. Now as I have no money to pay for a website for this project, I only had a few resources available to me to create this page. Facebook was to me a perfect fit. Facebook does all the hard work of hosting the page, keeping up with technology, and all I have to do is make sure no spammers get on and keep profanity out. That is for me about 5 min of work a day to keep this page active that I volunteer. Now the SBB was always meant to be driven by the residents of Saturna as to what was important to them and one of the things that is great about Facebook is if no one is interested in a posted topic it quickly gets buried and lost way down the list. This ensures that only what is hot stays on top and the rest goes away. 2) Is a Face book group a place to post controversial ideas? For that I went to Facebooks own definition. https://facebook/notes/facebook/facebook-tips-whats-the-difference-between-a-facebook-page-and-group/324706977130 “Facebook Groups While Pages were designed to be the official profiles for entities, such as celebrities, brands or businesses, Facebook Groups are the place for small group communication and for people to share their common interests and express their opinion. Groups allow people to come together around a common cause, issue or activity to organize, express objectives, discuss issues, post photos and share related content. 3) Is a bulletin board a place to post controversial ideas? For that I went to the ever popular Wikipedia. Feel free to get lost in all the links but the answer as far as I can tell is yes but the term Bulletin Board is a little old school, looks like my 80’s is shining through again. The more Twenty Tens (I had to look that up too, man am I getting old and outdated) term is a forum or message board en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulletin_board A bulletin board (pinboard, pin board, noticeboard, or notice board in British English) is a surface intended for the posting of public messages, for example, to advertise items wanted or for sale, announce events, or provide information. Bulletin boards are often made of a material such as cork to facilitate addition and removal of messages, or they can be placed on computer networks so people can leave and erase messages for other people to read and see….. ….Internet forums are becoming a global replacement for traditional bulletin boards. Online bulletin boards are sometimes referred to as message boards. The terms bulletin board, message board and even Internet forum are interchangeable, although often one bulletin board or message board can contain a number of Internet forums or discussion groups. An online board can serve the same purpose as a physical bulletin board. 4) Should I censor people’s opinions in this group? I chose the non censorship approach because I do not feel that I am in any way capable of deciding what is best for the majority of Saturna Residents and even if I thought I knew or people felt I knew (and that is one dangerous slippery slope) what was best for Saturna Residents I do not have the right to enforce my ideals or opinions on to Saturna Residents. This has nothing to do with whether I agree with a post, or like the person who made the post, or agree with how the post was made. Now I know many people will be upset with me and I will probably lose customers, friends etc because of this, but I will not censor people’s ideas or opinions. So what to do about this Group? I have decided to rebrand it to less my 80’s taste and keep up with the Twenty Tens as the all new Saturna Island Forum and Message Board to help reduce confusion as to its purpose. Please encourage people to read what the group is about before joining or recommending! I am sorry but I do not have the time to make sure everyone has read the about section of this group. It is always a good idea to read the about of any group before you join. Regards, the lug nut that made this page.
