Well, we are home. We got home at 12:30 last night and needless to say we are exhausted, but our hearts are filled with wonderful memories and moments that will last us forever. It is truly hard to explain what this week was like for us. How do you put all the smiles, laughter, quiet moments, and relaxing times into words? I will say, though, that this trip forever changed us in many ways. There are so many people who work and volunteer at Give Kids the Word that are amazing. They go out of their way to make sure that our week was stress free. The place keeps running from volunteers and sponsors- and they have seriously thought of everything. Tom and I already decided that some day we will go back with Lexi and volunteer there to give back. I also met some really terrific families. We met a family from London whos son is done with chemo, a mom whos son just had his scalp put back on after suffering an aneurism and a stroke before even turning 4, and a mom whos son had a brain tumor and they had to spend 9 months at St. Judes (I think Lexi was crushing on the blonde haired Southern cutie!). I saw the sheer joy of children in wheelchairs who do not have mobility or use of their legs being pushed in the sprinkler section of the pool. They looked like just a normal kid- how it should be. No doctors, no needles, no throwing up, no chemo, no surgeries- just enjoying and laughing like kids do. I am forever grateful and humbled by the good in people and the sheer resilience in these children.
