Well, we thought we were going to get to go home as early as this - TopicsExpress

Well, we thought we were going to get to go home as early as this past Tuesday evening. However, Naomi has had intermittent issues crop up each day that have given the docs reason to say Lets just watch her one more night...... Needless to say, six nights later, were still here. Shes had desats that have caused her to go on oxygen then off then back on then off. Shes had periods of unusual irritability, low grade temps that have popped up only at night....just things that dont necessarily seem surprising by themselves. But, when they all culminate together, its a major event....which brings us to today. As of yesterday, today was supposed to be our going home day. The nurses even had a little house next to Naomis name on their patient roster. However, our day has turned into a rather eventful one that resulted in an ACT being called on Naomi. From the time the docs rounded this morning Naomi had been getting increasingly agitated. She seemed to be in pain every time she was moved even the slightest bit and she had a huge projectile emesis. She was taken for a chest and abdomen xray today that showed an increase in pulmonary edema, a right plural effusion and a large amount of stool in her bowels (even though she had two large bowel movements shortly before her xray). Naomi has had a lot of trouble breathing today which included retractions, nasal flarring, keeping her head arched back, and turning an ashy color. Her sats indicated the need for increased oxygen as well. So, an ACT was called and Naomi was placed on the high flow oxygen machine (8 liters at 100%), they changed her lasix to iv form, started diuril, administered glycerin chips (which Naomi promptly rejected) and have now given her an oral med to try to get her bowels to empty. So far, no such luck. They tested he for respiratory viruses which was negative and they did blood work including gases but everything looks OK. Her temp has remained up around 100.2 and she has continued to seem irritable. Her breathing isnt improving much and theyve already bumped her up to 10 liters at this point. She simply appears to be struggling. She is asleep thanks to a dose of morphine but her posture is indicative of struggling to breathe. As I write this, they are considering calling another ACT on her and sending her to the ICU. I cant say enough about our awesome nurses as they have been by Naomis side constantly today and have been working so incredibly hard to help provide comfort to both Naomi as well as to me. Its been a long day and Im sure it will be a long night. Please continue to keep our Naomi in your prayers.
