Well, you succeeded in making extraordinary happen this week, - TopicsExpress

Well, you succeeded in making extraordinary happen this week, Ashland University. I guess you really meant what you said when you picked this new useless tagline. All in the name of financial productivity. Doesnt that sound like a made up, useless phrase? Thats because it is. If we measured all faculty and departments in higher education by that standard, all of the humanities would slowly disappear. Those of us who study history and political philosophy might not bring you the big bucks, but in the department I just graduated from, we cant function without quality professors who give their heart and soul to teaching in Socratic seminar-style classrooms. You just ripped some of that heart and soul from us. You arbitrarily decided to let go one of the best professors at AU. Were talking about a professor who seemed to frequently work 20 hour days because he cares so much about his students. Hes that guy that jumps up and down at the front of the classroom when students discover some truth in the class discussions we have. Hes the professor who makes himself available to help us learn at all hours. Hes one who will talk to a student one-on-one for hours at a time just to work through a single paragraph in an obscure writing to help the student make some sense of it. After nearly dying of cancer, he was back at AU in only a few days to give any ounce of strength he had to help his students during thesis defenses and finals week. This man will do just about anything to help his students succeed in the classroom and in life. But its alright. You saved 1% of the budget. A whopping 1%. I dont know who the other 14 professors youre cutting are, but if any of them are half the man that my friend is, theyre worth 1% of the budget. Please try to focus on cutting things that will actually help get us back to financial stability, like our insane administrative expenses and useless graduate programs with no enrollment. Or you can just get rid of a few dozen more quality faculty. Keep cutting professors, like my friend, who truly know how to put the Accent on the Individual, and youll soon find that AU is just another small, boring, Midwest school without an identity.
