Wenger’s self-derived rules: 1. Substitutions: none allowed until the 80th minute 2. Team selection: no changes allowed until someone injured 3. Tactics: select the tactic that will help players learn to play unfamiliar positions, not the tactic that will win the game. These rules are based fundamentally on an untrue hypothesis of “long-term planning” that the team will gel together in 5 months’ time, that players will improve in 5 years’ time. The hypothesis isn’t true because it doesn’t take into account players injured, leaving, morale, and elephant in the room short-term results. Using these rules in the context of the EPL, where the reality is to win games, is like basing your calculation “1 + 1 = 4″ on the untrue hypothesis that “1 = 2″.
