Went to a forum on HUNGER (aka Food Insecurity) sponsored by Rory Ellinger, State Representative, in University City this evening and am still overly stimulated by that meeting. The only other state in the USA that has a bigger hunger problem than Missouri is Mississippi! Poverty and hunger seem to be most problematic in rural areas and in the Ozarks. I cant believe Missouri ranks #2 in the worst states for hunger! And DO NOT talk to me about people who abuse food stamps. Turn around time on a food stamp application is 45 days - imagine, youre in your 50s, lost your job in the recession (depression), cant find a job paying anywhere near what you were making before being downsized and your kids are hungry - or you leave in a small town where a corporation decided to shut down a factory and you and your neighbors are all going hungry! The shame is on those of us who are employed and look down on those who are not!
