Went to see UNBROKEN this afternoon. Brought back memories of dad. Dad flew in the same plane, was also a bombardier , was shot own over the Sea of Japan , floated in the sea alone in jut his Mae West (two days alone, most of the crew died or was spread out after they ejected) . Was one of the rare prisoners held in a camp on mainland Japan, outside Nagasacki . Was 180 lbs when shot down,95 when rescued! Was only 17 when he became a prisoner( grandma forged his papers at 16). Was beaten, starved ,most of the bones in his hands and feet broken, yet lever lost his spirit( kept secret diary on toilet paper, used black off his shoes to write. Pronounced dead only to return home almost. 2 years later! Never held a grudge against his captors ( it was war you know!) seeing this movie brought out this and many more memories about dad s WWII experiences. They really were the GREATEST GENERATION! Wherever you are dad, Im thinking of you!
