Went up the mountain In an eagle’s nest I once spied a precious jewel, From down the mountain, I beheld its alluring glimmer, Forgetting everything, I started the long trudge up the mountain, To get for myself the precious jewel. A snake bit me as I passed across the valley… But my hope washed its venom. A leopard fought me just as I made through the woodland… But my vision gave me strength. An elephant trampled on me as I passed by the open… But my zeal made me whole. Geckos, spiders and scorpions all never left me, But I overcame all by the immensity of my ambition. Just as I had skirted the way up, A heavy downpour ensued… I was drenched with the rain of discouragement. How could I survive the mountain cold? How would I face the strong-clawed eagle though I be so bold? A flash of lightning lit the sky, And its brilliance made the jewel elicit a new sparkle, Then I was imbued with a new zeal, And momentarily the coldness warmed away, As I resumed my long trudge up the mount. “Don’t despair!” My heart, my one faithful companion told me… ‘’Don’t lose sight’’ My eyes, my veteran guide admonished… ‘’Never tire’’ My muscles, my diligent assistants advised… Then with an indefatigable spirit, stout heart and incomparable hope, I knew the mountain soon I would conquer… The eagle soon I will defeat, And the precious jewel, with the alluring glimmer, would soon be mine. Then I touched the peak of the mount, I pulled myself over and sat, Whereby I evicted my thirst By drinking from a nearby fount. I pulled out a sling from my shirt… Spied a rock with a sharp side, Took it in readiness for the final duel. I was hungry for victory. I was hungry for food… I craved the eagle’s meat and coveted its precious jewel! I hunted one bird with two lusts. I spotted the eagle, proudly upon its nest, An evil urge tugged at my chest, The pleasure of seeing its blood spill… With a hunter’s gaze and aim, I pulled back my sling with its rock, And with a sadistic grin and an evil wink, I let the rock fly to a perilous meeting with its unlucky victim. Oops! The eagle didn’t wait… My meat had flown away. Better, I thought, I shall not deal with claws in retrieving my precious jewel, Victory was guaranteed. But just as I gloried in that lurid thought, My eyes were almost blinded by a brilliance emanating from between the eagle’s claws, It had taken my victory with it too. I lumbered to a nearby boulder, And sat my weight there. I painfully watched it fly away as my hopes sunk each time it flapped its mighty wing, It flew all the way to another mountain, Between us an impassable gulf. I took another rock, mightier and sharper, Put it between my slings and wanted to fly it when I thought ‘it will do no good’, The jewel would still be the other side… The eagle would still die the other side, And I cannot reach the other side. I determined to lure the flesh loving eagle back, And so I sang: Oh mighty eagle, the heavens spread forth their face only for you to admire, The sun shines forth only for you to see, The forests grow only for you to stay, And we men come up the mountain to just admire thy beauty. When I threw the rock, I only wanted to see you fly… To see you express your might and impress my feeble heart. Come back, oh mighty eagle, For I want to see your mightiness once again expressed. Oh mighty eagle, come I show you my home, My stupid hen recently hatched seven delicious chicks, Go and have your fill, O king of the mount…
