Were about to enter a spell of very unsettled weather, even by January standards. Please keep an eye on the Met Office weather warnings over coming days as disruption to travel looks very likely. The first spell of severe gales sets in overnight and through tomorrow morning. Winds gusts will increase overnight reaching 50 - 60mph during the morning. Exposed locations may see gusts of 60 - 70mph at times. It will be a wet day with periods of rain, some heavy. But, it will be very mild, temps hitting double figures. Then eyes turn to Thursday night / Friday morning. The first chart is for 00:00 Friday and shows a deep depression sitting west of Lewis. This system will track north east overnight and on its southern edge will produce a spell of severe gales with gusts perhaps reaching storm force in the most exposed locations. Thats 70 - 80mph. The depression should be moving fairly quickly so winds will gradually subside to gale force through Friday morning. Friday will turn colder with squally showers, these increasingly wintry on the mountains. There remains a lot of uncertainty about the system during Friday evening and Saturday morning. The second chart is for 00:00 Saturday and it shows a very deep depression - 938hPa - sitting just off the north coast of Scotland. During Friday evening and through into Saturday morning severe gales will develop with storm force gusts in exposed locations. However, the problem at the moment is knowing just how far north or south the system tracks in relation to Skye, and what its central pressure drops to. These will have a large bearing on wind speeds for us. So, were going to have to wait and see what the next set of computer models cook up and go from there.
