Were continuing our journey through the Deliverance.. just because we like it.... We are leaving the hull and climbing this narrow ladder to the stern of the ship. This was the most comfortable part of the Deliverance. It was relatively spacious with a six-foot ceiling, several bunks, two windows and a tiny gallery balcony off the rear. This was the nerve centre of the vessel. Here, Captain Christopher Newport and Governor Thomas Gates spent much of their time at sea, consulting navigational maps, plotting the ships course and directing the crew. The two officers also slept here. Their rank and privilege permitted them more privacy and comfort than the rest of the passengers enjoyed. Unlike the below decks, the Great Cabin had plenty of light and fresh air. The door could be closed to keep out lashing rain or spray from the waves. The cabins ceiling is the Poop Deck above, a viewpoint and signalling platform accessible from the main deck by a set of steps. Did you know ? Sir Thomas Gates stayed in Virginia for three years and helped make the colony a success. One of his projects was construction of a Governors house in Jamestown. It was made of limestone brought from Bermuda as a ballast on Deliverance.
