Im glad theyre out there. And not just as collaborators. In this moment when reporting budgets are still being slashed in newsrooms everywhere, I love that ProPublica has figured out how to keep in-depth reporting going, and going with such aggressiveness and variety I love that theres a special clubhouse for brainiac reporters to wield their full investigative powers. Is it ridiculous that I picture it like the headquarters that teams of superheroes always have in movies? That mansion in X-Men films or the flying aircraft carrier in the Avengers? Except in ProPublicas case, the superpowers each person brings to bear is his or her intense expertise in some subject, the kind of knowledge you only arrive at after years or decades on a beat. Its crazy working with them sometimes, well start talking about some side issue or bit of obscure legislative or regulatory history that isnt part of the story and theyll know everything about that also. People like this need to stay in journalism. They need a place to ply their craft. They deserve support.
