Were still at Ferry Reach... Head west from the Magazine, and you will run into the Martello Tower. This was begun by Major Thomas Blanshard of the Royal Engineers in 1823 and bears the date above its entrance. Originally of French design, the British adopted this simple, yet effective defensive work and built a string of them across the south of England and in many colonies. The single cannon on the tower commanded a 360 degree arc of fire. The walls are asymmetrical, with the thickest part facing the gap between Ferry Point and Cony Island, the most likely direction of attack. The tower is the only example of this type of fortification in Bermuda. In 1828, Blanshard built the magazine (that we have already visited). (St. Georges Architectural Heritage)
