Were you offended by the Coke commercial that aired during the Super Bowl? Heres a couple of fun facts, but first, please allow me to express just how much disregard I have for delicate sensitivities. A lot. I have a lot of disregard. I have sooo much disregard for what offends. I dont care about your over-sensitivities is the message Im trying to get across here. But anyway, on to the fun facts section: First, in case you were confused, the song sang during that commercial was not our national anthem, which in case youve forgotten, is titled Star Spangled Banner and starts with the phrase Oh say can you see... The song sang during the commercial is titled America the Beautiful which starts with the phrase O beautiful, for spacious skies... Second, America does not mean this country. I know a lot of you are so used to truncating the name of this country that you somehow feel entitled to co-opting the name, but you are wrong for doing so. This country is the United States of America. Whats in a name, you ask? Why, all the information you need to put it all together. What we have here are some states, that are united, and just so happen to be in a much larger space, a continent perhaps, named America. Third, since weve established that this country is not America, you may now be wondering just how many countries there are in America. I can help you with that, too. The North American and South American continents, collectively known as The Americas, have a mix of sovereign and dependent states, totaling 36. In this continent, which is North America, the total number is 23. Note that the United States of America is indeed located in North America. South America has a grand total of 13. According to my map, the United States of America is noticeably absent from South America. Forth, if we were to take an inventory of each country, we would quickly see that most of The Americas is not comprised of old, white, English-speaking men. Fifth, all small-minded, pretentious bigots should go ahead and shut the hell up. So, what exactly was it about a Coke commercial showing multinational people singing a multinational song in multinational languages that offended you, again? Sea to Shining Sea, indeed.
