Wes Studi December 14 at 11:55am · My friend SaSu Weh shared this on my personal page in response to the Leonard video: I was giving Leonard art lessons only a few weeks before he was arrested. We were in a remote location near the Canadian boarder, I didnt know who he was at the time, something that was cleared many times by the feds. How we met in such a remote location I will tell that story later. Leonard stayed with me and Brenda Chergo for several months, we got along very well, he was a teacher himself and a very knowledgeable man, I was happy at the time that he came into my life. He liked my art work and one day asked me if I could teach him how to draw and paint, he was doing some sketches and they were like petroglyph art. I said I would and we worked together daily, I was just teaching him basic art principles, basic shapes, line construction and weight, balance and design, color, lighting, and composition. The time I spent with Leonard Peltier teaching him about art really gave me an insight into the man. When you discuss art from technique to influences you are really talking about a great deal more than one might think, anywhere from philosophy to politics. Much of learning about the nuts and bolts of art is about what light does to objects but more about how we see things and how we observe from working views to perspectives. Much of that relates to what we gain and how we feel about life itself. So we talked not just about the practical techniques but its practical application as well, what kind of art do you want to make for what reasons. So I did figure out not knowing who he is really was, that this was a man about to have a lot of time on his hands? I didnt ask and I was not told this, but thinking back he did act like it on many occasions. None of it was in a violent way, nothing I gained from Leonard in anyway lead me to believe Leonard Peltier was a violent man, I had a person to protect with me and would not have stood for any even violent talking person around me, regardless of who it was. On the contrary, I found Leonard Peltier teaching me more than what I had agreed to teach him in different ways on different subjects. We spent a lot of time in the woods observing nature and in that he had the most to offer. I came to think of Leonard as a very spiritual man, we took many sweats together and while Leonard was a pretty quite man, when he had something to say it was always worthwhile. Leonard was a quick study when it came to art, I wouldnt say a natural talent but a very fast learner, he absorbed the lessons. I did not teach the level of painting Leonard Peltier is doing today. I gave him simple basics of art, how he has achieved the level of art he is doing today I have no clue, to me its a spiritual thing of a mans need to express himself in the worst of conditions. I have not spoken to him since a couple of weeks before he was arrested, when he left the cabin we were at and went to Canada. Leonard was introduced to me by a mutual friend as Ernie. The point of this is, Leonard by any name was not a killer or an evil person on the contrary he was a teacher and a very spiritual person with a deep love for nature and life who was pursuing art. Over the years I have read much about his case and the man the Feds describe and that is not the man I met and lived with. Not in my or anybodies imagination could the Lenard Peltier be the dangerous man he has been painted as! I believe a great wrong has been perpetrated against Leonard and it is long over time to free him. I personally know he has a lot to teach all of us in the remaining years he has left.
