Westaro Mayo Masters League Week 5 Review Averaging over 7 goals a game, with 50 in total in the seven games played, week 5 produced a set of games which were much tighter and more intriguing, as the sides begin to balance themselves out. Table toppers Manulla and Westport United faced off in a clash of the titans showdown in Division One, whilst in Division Two, there were two shocks on the cards. In the opening game in Division One, Snugboro United took on Fahy Rovers. In a comfortable 4-1 win for the Castlebar based outfit, the goal scorers were Colin Corrigan, Ronan Connelly, Willie McDonnell and Zbigniew Dzluinski. Colin Napier scored Fahys solitary response. Game two was the meeting of the heavyweights. Both Manulla and Westport United were coming into this with 100% records, and something had to give. In the end, the points were shared between the two sides, in a pulsating 5-5 draw. Both sides remain unbeaten, and the goal scorers for Manulla were Dezzie Campbell (2), Lars Alworthy, John Hennelly and Roger Clarke. Westport, who had a man sent off late on, had John Dyar (2), Brian Fahy, Vinny O Malley and Alan McLoughlin on target for them. Straide and Foxford United took on Ballyvary Blue Bombers in an eagerly anticipated local derby in game three of Division One. The game was a tense affair, with Ballyvary eventually coming out on top, winning 4-2. Mick Kilgallon scored two, with John Loftus and Stephen Carolan also on target. Pat Reid bagged a brace for Straide and Foxford. The final game of Division One saw another derby, this time from East Mayo, as Swinford took on Urlaur United. Urlaur have looked impressive so far, with this game being no different, as they were victorious, 5-2. Pat McCann scored two, with the other goals coming from Tim Moriarty, Mick Regan and an own goal. Paul Halligan scored two for Swinford, who were reduced to six men late on. In the opening game of Division Two, Manulla B took on Ballina Town, who were coming into this game with a 100% record. However, Manulla B hadnt read the script, as they turned the North Mayo men over, with a 7-6 win. Alan Rumley scored a hat trick, with Damien Ansboro scoring two as well as Tom Cunnane and Dave McQuillan also being on target. Brian Casey and Keith Conroy scored two each for Ballina, with David Nash and John Conway also on target. Game two also produced a shock, with Conn Rangers coming out on top in a seven goal thriller against Kiltimagh/Knock United. Noel Hopkins scored a hat trick for Conn Rangers, with John Clarke also on target. Andy Leadbetter, Gavin Groarke and Adrian Forkan were on the score sheet for Kiltimagh/Knock United. Snugboro United B and Straide and Foxford United B faced off in the final game of the night, with Snugboro B emerging as comfortable 6-1 winners. James McHale scored a hat trick, with Stephen Boyle, Tom Canning and Gerry Concannon also on target. Shane Hughes had put S and F B in the lead early on, but they failed to capitalise on it. TEAM OF THE DAY: Manulla B.....After defeating the only unbeaten team left in their division, Manulla B are the team of the day. They produced an excellent display in their thirteen goal thriller with Ballina Town, who previously had a 100% record so far. PLAYER OF THE DAY: Des Cogan (Ballyvary Blue Bombers).....A calm and composed influence at the back, Cogan has been in super form throughout the campaign for Ballyvary. Wednesday was no different, as he snuffed out attack after attack, as Ballyvary kept Straide and Foxfords lively duo of John Jordan and Michael Smyth at bay. THIRD EYE: This one happened early on the night, as an attempted pass from Snugboro Uniteds Colin Corrigan managed to hit referee Martin Halligan on the head before running out for a throw in. There really is nothing more entertaining on the pitch than seeing a referee getting hit with the ball, and to be fair to Mr. Halligan, he laughed it off with a smile.
