Western Electric....I searched a couple different resources on this, and came across 2 founding dates, 1869 and 1872, so not sure which is correct, if you know, please post....t/y. Western Electric opened its Indianapolis doors in 1948 and closed them in 1986. and was the supplier to AT&T from 1881 to 1995. Bell telephone and AT&T were owned by this company. In the 1960s, Western Electric plant in Indy, was known as the largest telephone maker in the world, with over 9,100 workers, it was one of the citys larger and more stable employers. WE came to an end in 1995, when AT&T changed the name to Lucent Technologies, in preparation for its spin off. Lucent became independent in 1996. The company announced the closing of the plant on Sept. 13, 1983, and employees talked of losing there homes and their savings. The company had been in business for 35yrs. and closed due to overhead and production loss, which fell to $4.3 million units in 1982, down from $5.7 million in 1970....shut down was to begin in early 1984. Today, many of Western Electric telephones have become collectors items.
