Western Illinois University is the only public school in the U.S. - TopicsExpress

Western Illinois University is the only public school in the U.S. that has permission through the Department of the Navy to use the United States Marine Corps official seal and nickname, “The Fighting Leathernecks.” The rights were granted in 1927 to use the symbols as homage to the service of former Athletic Director Ray Hanson, in that military branch during WWI. We have proudly held the name “Leathernecks” since 1927 and are always appreciative of the men and women who have served and are currently serving in all areas of the U.S. military. We take great pride in having the Leatherneck name and honor everything the name represents. For more information visit our website.
