Weve been doing this--and getting along--in History and Literature for over 100 years (except, as my friend and colleague Wendy Lee pointed out, for our annual Hist vs. Lit softball games and bocce competitions, which bring out some fierce disciplinary partisanship!) Its one of the reasons its been my intellectual home, and anchor, since declaring the concentration in 1990, and teaching there, on and off, since 1998. Im proud to say we get it. (Wed also close read the hell out of the image of the gun/book that accompanies this article, as well as the ceasefiremetaphor!)
