Weve found an increasing number of questions have been asked lately about why we are vaccinating the pups and what this means when they go into their new homes. With recent reviews it has been a hard decision to opt to vaccinate a few days early of 8 weeks, hoping maternal antibodies have taken a drop and that vaccination will be done in the least stressful way with no stress immediately after. Its easier just to share some of the information that is readily available with everyone. The vaccination protocol for dogs has recently changed and each dog will now have 3 vaccination injections. These will offer a level of immunity to some viruses including Lepto and Parvo. There are 2 very opposed views on vaccination or natural approaches to dealing with K9 illness but one undeniable fact is that Parvo cases are increasing. The article below offers one charities take on the virus but there are some really important facts in there: Parvo can lie dormant in the environment for a long time and it is VERY difficult to clean as most household disinfectants are ineffective. Just one of the steps we have been using to control the infection risk for the pups is cleaning the room daily using Anigene HLD4V (a Defra approved disinfectant) that DOES kill parvo and using the spot spray version on ALL accidents. When the pups go to their new homes we advise that this level of control continues until the vaccination process is complete and that the pups are not exposed to a) Dogs that are known to be un-vaccinated and b) Areas where numerous Dogs may be walked and we cannot control the risk ie Beaches and parks.
