Heres the full blurb: CONQUEST OF SPACE SYMPOSIUM Science Fiction and Contemporary Art Saturday June 14, 2014. COFA Paddington, Lecture Theatre EGO2 Call for Papers Conquest of Space is an exhibition that examines the thematic and conceptual connections between science fiction and contemporary art. The exhibition traces the links between the work of contemporary artists with that of Modern and Colonial artists, and with international practitioners. In conjunction with the exhibition Galleries UNSW is hosting a one-day symposium to be held on Saturday June 14, 2014. Current UNSW students, post-graduate researchers and academics are invited to submit papers for consideration for inclusion on one of four thematically grouped panels to be held on the day. Papers are invited on the following topics: • Science fiction and contemporary art • Science fiction and the work of individual contemporary artist[s] • Science fiction as a visual experience • Formulations of the “future” and how it relates to the creation of art, film, games etc • Critical and theoretical readings of science fiction film, art, games etc • The examination of SF tropes, concepts etc as they relate to narrative in video art, film, games • Science fiction and its influence on sound art, soundtracks, and music • The study of genre with specific reference to SF • Considerations of the nature of visuality as it relates to generic SF or quasi-generic objects such as works of art, examples of design and architecture • Any more general papers related to SF in literature, film or other media Presentations should be no longer than 20 minutes and should be supported by visual/sound material. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words in length. Successful applicants will be notified mid-May.
