We’re hoping Johnny Depp will retweet the latest piece in Nick Turse’s series on the U.S. military’s moves into Africa, since it’s not a boots on the ground, but a pirates on the high seas piece. And while that may be my idea of a joke, Turse’s report is anything but. It turns out that the U.S. military, which has been making destabilizing moves across the African continent for several years, hasn’t been leaving out the waters around its shores. (In a way, if you remember the Barbary Pirates and the famed words of the Marine Corps Hymn, this is where the U.S. started overseas back in the eighteenth century and here we are again in the twenty-first.)
