We’re nearing graduation season, so it’s time for what’s becoming a common ritual: protesting the commencement speaker. This year’s most high-profile uproar is at Rutgers, where liberal faculty and students are having a cow over Condoleezza Rice giving the address. Greg Lukianoff of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education told the Philadelphia Inquirer that there’ve been 70 fits thrown over speakers in the past decade, 17 just last year alone. So I’m going to offer college students some wisdom you don’t have to sit through a graduation ceremony to hear. No matter how smart you think you are, people like former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice know more than you do. They even know more about issues that you think you know all about than you do. That’s because you studied history. They made history. The fact that your liberal professors told you they’re evil doesn’t mean they have nothing of value to impart to you. So out of four years in college, take just 20 minutes to sit down, shut up and listen to the other side. You’ll find once you’re out in the real world that that’s how you actually learn things.
