What Are The Risks Of Poor Dental Health? Improper, or non-existent, dental care can cause numerous serious medical problems. Fortunately, most are fairly easy to prevent if you take the proper precautions. Three Most Common Dental Problems 1. Bad Breath Bad breath is more than a nuisance. Besides being a deterrent to meeting new people, and keeping the friends we have, bad breath is almost always a sign of serious dental conditions. In fact, recent studies suggest that nearly 85% of all cases of bad breath reveal something far more dangerous. Bad breath is most commonly caused by gum disease, cavities, oral cancer, and the presence of “bad” bacteria. 2. Tooth Decay Tooth decay, more commonly known as “cavities,” is second only to the common cold as America’s most common disease. When plaque, a sticky layer of bacteria, forms on the surface of teeth (and it’s continually forming) and combines with the sugars and starches present in the food we eat, they react – creating acids that eat away at tooth enamel, a tooth’s natural armor and the hardest substance in your body. 3. Gum Disease A study recently published found that almost 75% of Americans are living with gum, or “periodontal” disease! That’s a huge number, and gum disease can have huge effects on your general health! As in tooth decay, the main culprit in gum disease is the bacteria involved in plaque build-up. This time, it attacks the gums, potentially eating away at bone and tissue. If left untreated, gum disease can result tooth and bone loss. Among many diseases, gum disease has been linked to stroke, heart attack, and other cardiovascular conditions.
