What I Am Really Tired Of - Part 17: Entertainment Visuals That Ignore Basic Physical Realities I was watching a TV commercial for the new TV show The Flash. In parts of it, we see The Flash moving around at seemingly impossible speeds. That doesnt bother me. Thats what The Flash does, and I will willingly accept the impossibility of that. What did bother me though, and will keep me from watching the show (unless other parties make compelling arguments as to why I should watch the show), is this: Part of the commercial showed a guy on a bike, getting hit by a taxi. Its all in slow-motion and the bike-guy is flung into the air. Because its slo-mo, it looks like hes suspended in air. Before he crashes down to earth, however, The Flash speeds to the scene and, moving at his impossible speed, catches the bike-guy and whisks him to safety (or so the show wants us to believe). The Flash saved him, right!!??!!?? Lazy or unthinking writers will say Yes!. In reality, the impact on Bike-Guy that The Flash inflicts would be far worse, physically, than the impact from the taxi, or from the impact of the fall back to ground would ever cause. The Flash is moving at, lets say, Impossible Miles Per Hour, and basically smashes into Bike-Guy, causing him to drastically change his course of direction. Such an immediate and intense change of direction would surely kill him, yeah? Hed probably die just from the concussive forces his brain would be exposed to. The impact itself would surely break many of his bones. Have a look. This video isnt the TV ad, but it does contain the moment I refer to. Have a look - it happens at about 4:11 (but it should be pretty much cued up for you) Look a couple of times, and tell me how anyone could logically survive such a traumatic physical experience. Think about how fast this is all happening (its slo-mo remember). Its not even a measurable amount of time, surely, so fast it is. Look at how hard The Flash slams into him and causes his body to accelerate in a different direction. Bike-Guy is dead, folks. But I suspect hes not. I suspect The Flash saved him. Lazy physics. And THAT is why I am not watching The Flash. Things like this happen SO often in entertainments, and it really, really bugs me.
