What I did on my Christmas vacation ... Pictured are the bass traps I built in the two corners of the room to the rear of my stereo system. (The exotic looking black-grill things in the foreground are my electrostatic speakers.) The bass traps are made using layers of Roxul insulation, which is sound absorbent. The second pic shows the finished product, with the insulation covered. I havent made the other cover yet. The principle here is addition by subtraction. Bass sound waves bounce around much more than treble sound waves do. Depending on where the reverberating sound waves intersect, the waves can either cancel each other out (not enough bass in one part of the room) or reinforce each other (too much bass in a different part of the room). Absorbing some of the rogue bass sound waves can improve the quality of the bass and the imaging of the instruments -- addition by subtraction. Adding these bass traps effected an improvement in sound quality, at least to my ears. Interestingly, I found the sound to be better when I used less insulation in the left corner. The rear wall isnt symmetrical -- theres a recessed area with a window which is off centre, creating a smaller wall on the left. Apparently I needed to absorb more bass on the right as a result.
