What I shared with Tom Collins and Laura Mac on the Collins and Mac radio show on KFYO 790 AM early this morning. Texas A&M AgriLife: Everyone loves their blue jeans. What if we could help dye those jeans using a lot less water, and energy? What if it was made more efficiently and created less contaminants? That would all be a good thing, and maybe Wal-Mart might pass along those savings in less expensive pair of jeans to me and you! Over at the Texas Tech Fiber & Biopolymer Research Institute – the Wal-Mart Foundation is funding some exciting research that might be able to accomplish this. The new process they are testing is a Foam Indigo Dyeing (of cotton yarns) that might reduce the amount of water used by 90% and be better on the environment by using less energy! We work closely with Texas Tech and the staff at the Fiber & Biopolymer Research Institute. With our joint appointed professors (doing research at A&M and teaching at Tech) – in cotton research we work together from “gene” (like at the molecular level) to the “jean” that you put on one leg at a time in the morning! We appreciate working with Texas Tech, the Fiber Institute and having Wal-Mart help keep Cotton and blue jeans one of the most scientifically researched crops that we grow in this region. It is an amazing crop that helps to make one of the longest lasting fashion icons – the blue jean what it is! today.ttu.edu/2014/08/wal-mart-foundation-funds-research-that-could-improve-denim-dyeing-method/ I’ll share this info on the KFYO, Collins & Mac, and our Facebook pages. If you have any questions - email me at [email protected] Turf: Farmer’s Almanac – Hard Cold Winter at least for the North and East. Don’t believe that for our region that they are expecting it to be much colder than average but hopefully we might get a little more moisture. To help your turf along while it is still hot and dry to keep it healthy and strong to prepare for a possible harsh Winter. Let’s talk about taking care of your trees a little. Go get a Bullzeye water ring or just drag out your hose and let it slow trickle at the drip line (at the farest edge where your limbs reach out). A long deep soaking will help your trees, and with giving them a good long drink they won’t compete as much for the moisture and this can help your turf! Many trees have shallow roots and they will take up all the moisture and nutrients that they can and this will harden and compact the soil. I give free estimates and will answer any questions you have…. Email or call 806-632-3268 If you have any turf questions or would like to receive my monthly “Turf Tips” let me know turfandmore@yahoo Keep praying for rain – thanks and God Bless the USA!
