What I wasnt expecting from World War Z was a zombie version of Wish You Were Here, with Brad Pitt standing in for Judith Chalmers. The plot is back-of-envelope stuff, as our World Health Organisation protagonist zips from country to country (and set piece to set piece) for fairly tenuous plague-curing reasons, suggesting this sprawling tale might have been better served as a TV series. Director Marc Forster cant muster any emotional connection, maybe because Pitts wife (Mireille Enos) is reduced to moping around with a cell phone waiting for him to call with an occasional plot rewrite. Despite all these shortcomings, the action sequences are fast, sustained and sometimes shocking, with no shortage of money shots, and I cant believe that the jettisoned ending (involving a zombie massacre in Moscow) could have been any better than the one they famously substituted it for, a tense, tender-footed stealth assault at a disease centre in Wales, something of an understated highlight. I wouldnt crawl from my grave to see a sequel, but its still a solid 3.5*
