What Im doing at work right now: the greenhouse gas emissions scenario RCP8.5 is equivalent to 8.5 Watts per square meter at the top of the atmosphere - so how many 1500 W heaters is this equivalent to? Radius of earth, Re, 6378.1 km = 6.3781 x 10^6 m Distance to tropopause from center of earth is on average 9 km + radius of earth, so Rt = Re + 10 km = 6.388 x 10^6 m Surface area of top of atmosphere = SA = 4 x pi x Rt ^2 = 5.1279 x 10^14 m^2 To solve this for # of Heaters (H), H x 1500 W / SA = 8.5 W/m^2, we have H = 8.5 W/m^2 / 1500 W * 5.1279 x 10^14 m^2 = 2.905811 x 10^12 = 2.9 trillion 1500 W heaters. Does that sound right?
