What Most Affects #IBS Patients Self-Rated Health? Logically, it would make sense that symptom severity would play the biggest role in how people living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome perceive their overall health and well-being. But is that the case? According to a study by researchers at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine, these ratings are associated most with other issues that come with IBS rather than GI symptoms. They surveyed 234 IBS patients and found psychological variables, such as anxiety, stress, and depression had the greatest effects; followed by negative social interactions, then non-digestive symptoms like fatigue, general feelings of being unwell, or other medical conditions in addition to IBS. The severity of IBS symptoms appears to have a relatively modest role in how IBS patients describe their health in general.
