What Moves You? How do weave from complacently to action: Consider this: American violinist Joshua Bell is one of the finest classical musicians in the world. He consistently fills concert halls and hearts with the beauty of his sublime art. Have you seen the YouTube video of Joshua playing Bach in the DC metro on his $3.5 million Stradivarius violin? Hundreds of people rushed by, oblivious, except for a handful who lingered, including one three-year-old boy who stood in awe until his mother pulled him along. In fact, most of the children who passed Joshua tried to stop and listen—seeing, hearing, and feeling the beauty of the music in their hearts, and knowing it was something special. Three nights earlier, Joshua played Bach to a full house at Boston’s Symphony Hall. Tickets ranged in the hundreds of dollars. At the metro station, wearing jeans and a baseball cap, he played a 43-minute set of six Bach pieces. Seven people stopped to listen and he made $32 and some change. Why is it that we are sometimes blind to beauty? Why are we caught up in transactional acts of generosity when transformational experiences grounded in our heart’s desire await us?
