What The Sailor Senshi Will (Probably) Sound Like in Sailor Moon - TopicsExpress

What The Sailor Senshi Will (Probably) Sound Like in Sailor Moon Crystal: So the cast list for the Sailor Moon reboot came out the other day. I admit to looking forward to it very much, since it had given me hope that since Kotono Mitsuishi had already committed to reprising her role as Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon, that maybe at least some of the other seiyuu would come back as well. Alas, that didn’t happen – of the announced cast, only Mitsuishi and Tohru Furuya (Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask) are returning. Still, the other announcements have given me something to chew on, and allow me to make my personal predictions on how the new Sailor Senshi will probably sound. Note: this is just my opinion, solely based on the assumption that they will make the new cast sound as much like the original cast as possible. Kotono Mitsuishi – Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon This kind of goes without saying how Usagi will sound, since she’s retaining her original seiyuu. That said, Mitsuishi herself has previously admitted that she can no longer reach the high pitches that she could in the series’ original run – she is older now, after all. However, I do not believe this will pose a problem. The new anime is supposed to be much more faithful to the manga, and Usagi is not nearly the crybaby in the manga that she is in the original anime. Hence, little to no high-pitched wailing. YUMEKO-CHAN’S PREDICTION: Not as high-pitched but essentially the same Hisako Kanemoto – Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury Kanemoto replaces Aya Hisakawa as the brains of the group, Ami/Mercury. This announcement initially disappointed me, knowing that Hisakawa is still quite active in the industry. I’m sure she has her reasons for not returning, so let’s turn to Kanemoto. I admit to not knowing her name outright, so it took some Googling to learn that I already know her; she is the voice of Amy in Suisei no Gargantia, Yui in Kokoro Connect, and Haru in the currently-running Akuma no Riddle. She certainly has a high-pitched voice in the roles I know her in, but I have a hard time picturing her pulling off the maturity of Hisakawa’s Ami. But she may surprise me yet. YUMEKO-CHAN’S PREDICTION: A slightly lower-pitched Yui Rina Satou – Rei Hino/Sailor Mars I had been looking forward to this announcement the most. Rei’s original seiyuu, Michie Tomizawa, is a personal favorite of mine, and while I knew that she had retired after getting married early in the ‘00s, I also knew she had come out of retirement to provide the voice of Roberta for Black Lagoon, so I had my fingers crossed that she would do the same for Rei. Nope. Instead, Satou will take on the role. I personally know her as Mikoto Misaka from the Index/Railgun franchises and Haruka Minami in Minami-ke. She’s also done several male voices, which proves she has quite the range and can take on a variety of roles. I’m confident she can do justice to Rei. YUMEKO-CHAN’S PREDICTION: Haruka with attitude Ami Koshimizu – Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter I literally clapped when I saw this casting. I thought it was too perfect. No offense to Emi Shinohara, but I’m quite looking forward to Koshimizu’s performance. Anyone who’s watched Kill La Kill should instantly recognize her as being the voice of Ryuuko Matoi, and also voices Charlotte Yeager in Strike Witches and Maou in Maoyu. This range, I think, proves she can do girly voices as well as tomboyish, which makes her perfect for the tomboyish-yet-girly Makoto. YUMEKO-CHAN’S PREDICTION: Slightly deeper-pitched Charlotte Shizuka Itou – Minako Aino/Sailor Venus Holy crap, I did NOT see this casting coming. Taking over for Rica Fukami, I personally know Itou for her extremely wide range; most seiyuu I can usually pick out pretty easily, but her voice changes so much with each role that I can never pick her out! For me, when I hear her name, I instantly get images of Haruka Morishima from Amagami SS, Hilda from Beelzebub, and Wilhelmina from Shakugan no Shana (my husband always associates her with Tamaki Kousaka from To Heart 2). I actually am praying she does NOT try to sound too much like Fukami’s Minako; that voice could get very high-pitched, almost screechy at time, more so than Usagi’s, so I hope she can stick with at least a more tolerable soprano tone. YUMEKO-CHAN’S PREDICTION: Very slightly higher-pitched Haruka
