What You Need to Know About Failure to Be Successful You cannot talk success without first talking about failure. The two come in a group package – to aspire for success you must first recognize the possibility of failure. With failure lies a huge fear. Failure is a phobia for most people. It leads us to inaction. It withholds us from success. In many aspects of life, we see men not strive for success out of fear of failure. The glory of success is not enough to overcome the pain of failure for these men. Men who don’t approach the girl of their dreams out of fear of rejection. Men who fail to invest out of fear of becoming broke. Countless people who give up on their dream out of fear of how they will be perceived if they fail. But failure doesn’t have to impact you that way. There are a few things about failure that the great men – the men who are most successful – understand. These things are what propels them past the fear of failure and into the glory of success…the things that will propel you to success as well. We fear failure because we fear criticism In caveman times, the difference between success and failure could be life or death. You have one arrow to throw at an attacking animal and if you fail and miss, you become food. Now, the stakes are not as high. You fail – you can sulk in your failure or try again – but you won’t die from it. Our fear of failure has evolved. Our fear of failure is no longer attached to the fear of death, but to the fear of being criticized by others. We fear rejection because we don’t want to be ridiculed. You choose to pursue business instead of your dream of art because you fear how your parents and relatives will view you if it doesn’t work out. It’s too often that we let the perception of others impact whether or not we strive for success. We’d rather play it safe and never strive for success because of how people will view us if we fail. The cure for this is self-reliance. Learn to value your own opinion over the opinion of others. Whether you succeed or fail, you can be happy with yourself because of the fact that you tried. Criticism and judgement from others is imminent. If you fail, you will be criticized, and if you succeed you will be criticized. In the end, you can’t make everyone happy so you may as well do what makes you happy. Failure is dependent on perception Before Thomas Edison created the light bulb, he was unsuccessful 10,000 times before he succeeded. It would be easy to perceive each of those attempts as failures. However, in Edison’s eyes, they weren’t 10,000 failures, but rather 10,000 steps to success. “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work,” he would go on to say Whether an event is a failure or just temporary defeat is based on your perception. The great minds of the world see failure as an opportunity for greater success. Failure is a learning tool to great men – not a finish line. Once you start to perceive failure in this light, you will be on your way to more success. Accomplishing a mindset such as this is not an easy task. Firstly, it takes patience. Many men would not be willing to go through 10,000 steps in order to obtain success. It takes one who is truly dedicated. Secondly, it takes a mind that’s geared towards positive thinking. Minds filled with limiting beliefs, cynical minds, and those with no faith cannot see the bigger picture – they can only see the failure. “If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward” This was Edison’s mindset, and it can be yours as well. Perseverance trumps failure The only true failure is when you fail and stop trying. Perseverance is the Kryptonite for failure. Failure is a tool that life uses to weed out those who do not truly deserve success. No one gains any worthy success without failing first. The average person quits after failure (or never tries in the first place). This is why there is an outstanding number of average men and only a few great men. Great men have failed numerous times. However, with each failure that life dishes out, the great men of the world continue to strive for success. After failing enough times – whether it be 3 times or 10,000 times – life stops dishing out failure and these great men reach success. If you ever want success, you must face failure. But when you face it – face it knowing that perseverance is the ultimate tool to defeat failure. You must have the ability to pick yourself up and try again. It takes a burning desire to succeed to accomplish this. Having a strong desire for what you are striving for will give you the strength to pick yourself up after you have fallen. But more importantly, it takes faith. The belief that you are capable of attaining success will give you the strength to persevere. The joy of success The threat of failure is real. The fear of failure is more than capable of paralyzing men with great potential into inaction. In order to achieve success, you must acknowledge the high likelihood of failure. But…the joy of success is far greater than the pain of failure. Great men can vouch for the fact that the success far is far greater than the cost of failure. It’s reasonable for the thought of failure to slip into your mind when you think of success. In fact, its perfectly fine and realistic to acknowledge the fear of failure. However, you don’t have to let that fear stop you. With a better understanding of failure, you now have the tools to move past it and be successful. You have the potential to greatness. You can choose to let failure hold you back or you can move past it. If you enjoyed the article, be sure to like it and share it with others.
