What a confusing, frustrating and obfuscated day, an appropriate end to workweek that was equally and by turns gratifying and fury inducing. However your week, whatever your relationship to your particular trade or chore or McJob—we are almost free, some of us, anyway, from the fetters that feed us. Soon, oh I hope so very soon, the Wildman will be on the loose. Take the time this weekend, if you will, to do a few things that will make you feel better, and help someone else, too. Hug your momma, if you can. Thank your daddy, and tell him what he means to you. Talk to your grandparents. Hold your kids so close they squirm. Love your siblings. A friend of mine is rushing to the hospital with one of his right this moment, and the prognosis is far from reassuring, so remember—they are the only brothers and sisters you have. Bury the hatchet (somewhere other than their heads) and tell them you love them. Roll in the grass with your dog. Make faces at a cat. Tell a joke to a goat. Scratch a friendly pig. Laugh with a donkey. Gossip with a goose. Howl at a coyote. Gobble at a turkey. Whistle at a mockingbird. Hum to a bee. Read to a little kid. Play a game by his or her rules. Take a walk. Skip a rock. Examine a tree, a brush pile, a ditch, an anthill. Trace the lines in a stump, and figure out the years between each one. Ask their opinion. Listen to them. We can learn a lot from little kids, if we’ll just take the time to pay attention. Little kids know stuff we have long since forgotten. Watch the sun set, the moon rise, and the sun rise again in the morning. Count the stars in one little section of the night sky. Remember that each one of those stars has its own planets, and God made every single one of them—and more we’ll never see. He made them, just as He made you and loves you, despite all you and I do to hurt Him. He gives us another chance, and the opportunity to spend eternity with Him, but we have to submit to His loving forgiveness. All we have to do is accept it. The One who created everything gave His Son’s life for our sins, and yet, we want to cling to those sins, which will destroy us. Why? Why, when the one who made the earth, the stars, the sun, the skies and everything else loves us so much, why do we reject him? Are we stupid, or what? Do something nice this weekend, with no hope or desire for recompense or recognition. It’s easy—a bottle of water, a few extra cents at the cash register, a smile, a handshake, a phone call or visit. It doesn’t take much to make a big difference if someone’s having a bad day. Even if they’re having a good day, and you do something nice, they might pay it forward to someone else whose trials we can’t imagine. Read your Bible, and go to church Sunday. Pray for the man in the pulpit. Listen to his words as sent by the Lord on high. Pray for his family, your church, the people beside you, your family, our nation, community, state and world. Pray for calm in the wake of this racial idiocy going on across the country. Pray that people grow up, and learn to love one another as God loves us. Pray for someone you don’t know, someone you don’t like, and someone who doesn’t like you. Pray for someone who has done you an undeserved wrong, and forgive them. When you run out of people and things to pray for, ask God. He doesn’t mind. In fact, I think he likes it when we say, “Here I am, Lord. How can I help?” Hold hands with the one you love in public, with a total lack of shame. Tell them you love them, and make sure they know. Remember to pull the trace chains together, since two mules headin’ in opposite directions starve. Mules pulling together each have a little leeway, only do half the work, and share the hay bale. I still have some chores to finish, but I know may of y’all are fleeing on the five o’clock freedom train, so I’ll just remind you to watch out for those weasels, and if you need me holler, and the Wildman will come a’running. Rattle the box, boys, and wake up the possums. The Wildman will soon be on the loose, and he is ready to howl. Y’all be good.
