What a cool opportunity for our local film community.....we are working with NYAPT on a conference. June 17, 2013 Dear Education Partners and Colleagues: The Cyr Foundation and the New York Association for Pupil Transportation are pleased and excited to invite you to join us for a unique social and educational opportunity during our 2013 Annual School Transportation Conference. We also are extending that invitation to up to five other individuals from your organization. At 3:30 PM on Monday, July 15, 2013, we will host a private, invitation-only screening of a nationally acclaimed documentary entitled “LA CAMIONETA.” This event will be held in the Swyer Theatre in the Empire State Performing Arts Center (The Egg). Once the film is completed, Mark Kendall, the film’s producer, will engage in a question-and-answer dialogue with the audience. The 72-minute film deals with a rich cultural story of Guatemalan villagers who come to America to purchase used school buses at auction. The film follows the villagers and the bus as they return to Guatemala where a specialized team of villagers convert the bus into a village transportation vehicle. The bus is hand-tooled, re-furbished, painted and finished to reflect the villagers’ customs and peoples and memories, etc. It is a fascinating and powerful story with many dimensions and, we believe, significant educational value. To underscore the educational merit of the film, we have learned that Vanderbilt University and its Center for Latin-American Studies is preparing a series of curricula allow incorporation of the film into classroom and academic activities. We will learn more about this important undertaking at the screening of the film.
